VETERANS DAY is celebrated on November 11 each year in the USA. This national holiday was originally called Armistice Day. U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. In proclaiming the holiday, he said «To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.»

Armistice Day was established in 1926 to commemorate the signing in 1918 of the armistice ending World War I and to honor Americans who had served in the war. On November 11, 1921 an unidentified American soldier killed in the war was burried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.; on the same day, unidentified soldiers were laid to rest at Westminster Abbey in London and at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of their countries on this day.

American effort during World War II (1941-1945) saw the greatest mobilization of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force in the nation’s history (more than 16 million people); some 5.7 million more served in the Korean War (1950 to 1953). President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation on June 1, 1954. From then on, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans, who served America in its armed forces.

VETERANS DAY now honors veterans of all wars in which the U.S. has fought. Veterans` organizations hold parades, the president places a wteath on the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, and other celebrations are held in states around the country. Free meals for Veterans are offered in many fast food and casual dinner restaurant chains. Because it is a federal holiday, some American workers and many students have Veterans Day off from work or school.

One of the most personal and meaningful Veterans Day activities for people is to send notes or cards to hospitalized veterans or those living in veterans homes. Or, better yet, visit a veteran in a local veterans hospital or veterans home. The best way to have a «happy Veterans Day» is to do something special to make a veteran happy.
