Draw Butterfly in Different Ways

We'll begin with the simpliest way of drawing for novices who take the first steps in that activity, the children who only start learning drawing skills.

Butterfly Drawn with Crayons

We'll start step by step drawing a beautiful Butterfly with crayons. Prepare crayons, ruler and eraser if necessary to delete some extra lines that may spoil the picture.

Step 1. Begin to draw a butterfly cocoon. It should be a bit thinner than an egg.

Step 2. Draw the wings. They are different in shape and size: the lower wings are stretched vertically while the upper ones horizontally.

Measure the same line segment on the left and on the right from the cocoon. Just here the upper and the lower wings will contact. The lower wings begin from one point down the cocoon. The upper wings don't contact up.

The form of the wings may not be ideal, but try to round them and make symmetric one to the other: an upper wing is symmetric to the other upper, the lower wing — to the other lower one.

Step 3. Draw the butterfly antennae. In the points where the upper wings begin from the cocoon, the antennae are drawn. Make a loop on the top of each antennae.

Now change the cocoon a little making it narrower to the bottom.

Step 4. Draw patterns on the wings. The patterns may be arbitrary. But most traditionally they are circles and stains. Your kids may draw simple patterns. On each wing draw 2 cicles: one bigger nearer to the edge of each wing: the other circle is smaller nearer to the cocoon.

You may come up with your own marvelous patterns.

Step 5. Deleting excess drawing elements. Have a look at your picture. If there's something unnecessary in it, then with an eraser delete some dashes or lines that helped you to draw. Outline the contour of the butterfly.

Step 6. Color the picture with crayons. Take crayons and paint your beauty brightly. We color the body yellow, the wings red and make the decorative circles on the wings blue and orange. You may paint your butterfly in other colors.

We thought our butterfly would look more beautiful on a bright background, that's why a green leef was drawn under it. Now it seems, as if our lovely creature is sitting on the leaf basking in the sun. It's fabulous!

More Complicated Drawing of a Butterfly

For advanced children-artists we've prepared a more complicated drawing of a butterfly with detailed instructions.

Step by Step Drawing for Children of All Ages. Butterfly in Different Ways

We'll show you how to draw the butterfly similar to the one in the above picture. It is drawn in pencil, then colored in crayons or paints. The butterfly colored with paints look brighter and more spectacular. You'll learn to draw correctly the butterfly body and wing shapes and the patterns on the wings. Let's start.

1. Draw the general contours of the butterfly.

First draw an oval and a circle — they are the first contours of the body and the head. Besides, on this stage draw 2 more pairs of lines as shown. The lines will help you to draw butterfly wings.

2. Draw the contours of the wings and the head.

Now draw the antennaes with the thickening at the edges. Add the contours of the upper and the lower wings. Draw the rounded contour of the upper part of the lower wings. Try to make the initial contours as accurately as possible: your drawing will depend much on the markup.

3. Draw the general contour of the wings.

This stage is simple: you have to connect the drawn lines into one general contour of the butterfly wings. Draw these lines not pressing the pencil hard as you'll have to correct them on the next stage.

4. Add the details to the contours of the butterfly wings.

The shape of the wings is «irregular», so there aren't any special rules how to draw them. Draw these contours arbitrarily as you like. The main here is that the wings should be symmetrical on both sides.

5. Draw the streaks on the wings.

The butterfly wings are delicate and transparent. But inside they have some streaks that you have to draw. Draw them arbitrarily not very many and symmetrical. You see, it's not difficult to draw a butterfly if you have detailed instructions. Now think about the patterns on the wings. There are some butterflies on wings of which large" eyes" are drawn. In this way nature helps butterflies to protect themselves from birds. Try to draw such a pattern on the wings, the picture'll be very spectacular.

6. Add the patterns and finish drawing the butterfly.

If your kids can't use paints yet, then color your butterfly with crayons or paint it in pencil. The difficulty here is to reflect the rough surface of the butterfly wings. Try to make it with the help of pencil strokes drawn in one direction. Later you may rub the strokes with the figure or other available materials: paper or solid eraser. Patterns on the wings are so many that you can draw any that you come up with. But almost all garden butterflies have a black stroke on the wings.
Apropos: Beneath we'll show you a number of butterflies with various patterns on the wings. Use them while drawing your own butterflies.
