You'll need:
1. Clay. It can be different: of various colors (green, white, orange), but the main here is its color after baking. I use an ordinary kind of red clay which after baking becomes brick red. Clay for modeling (plastic) may be bought in a shop or you can make it yourself as I did. To make our cat Spice Cake you'll need about a kilo of raw clay.

2. Ceramic slurry is the clay dissolved in water to the condition of thin gruel, like clay glue. All parts from clay are carefully stuck on ceramic slurry.

3. Stacks for modeling, a clay roll, sponge, a writing knife.

4. Food film.

5. A piece of lacy braid, sacking or any other surface pattern cloth.

6. A workpiece of a cat: it can be made from cardboard glued in some layers.

7. A furnace. If you have a muffler, that's nice; if not, find some ceramist and he'll help you bake your workpiece.

2. Cover the workpiece with food film.

3. Roll out the plastic into a layer about 5 mm thick on a wet piece of sacking. You may cover the plastic with the second piece of sacking so that it shouldn't stick to the clay roll.

4 The rolled out layer should be 3-5 cm thick from all sides more than our cat.

5. Now put the plastic pancake on the workpiece and press it out carefully from all sides according to the form. Cut off the excess of the plastic with a knife.

6. Form the head and the ears of the cat especially carefully. The appeared cracks on the plastic can be smoothened with wet sponge.

7. Cover the workpiece of a cat with sacking and roll it with a plastic roll so as to mark the pattern.

8. In the same way, mark a piece of lacing braid. I make it on the tail and in the center of the body — like a belt.

9. Now turn the cat over. It's easy to do it with a piece of thick cardboard. By drawing the film, pull the form out of the plastic.

10. Roll the flat cakes-supports and stick them onto the ceramic slurry. They won't allow to set the volume till the plastic dries.

11. It's time to shape the cat's individuality. With a round stack make holes for eyes. Put balls-eyes onto the slurry.

12. Form the cat's eyelids from small flat cakes. They'll give the eyes a special kind expression. Model the nose and draw a wide smile with a stack. Roll the balls-cheeks; don't forget to stick everything onto the slurry!

13. Make the holes for the ears and kind wrinkles-rays near the eyes with a flat stack. Form the cat's paws.

14. With a thin stick make some holes in which you'll put braids. Roll out thin braids, glue them onto the slurry and put into the holes.

15. Out of rolled layer of plastic cut a patch and stick it onto the cat. Decorate the patches with stitches, buttons and anything you like!

16. And you've got such a cat. Now it should dry at a room temperature for about 4-5 days. So that the plastic shouldn't crack, cover the workpiece with polyethylene, but don't press it — there shouldn't be sharp changes of temperature and humidity. The process of drying will be longer, but the workpiece won't crack. Then you bake the thing in a muffle furnace. The main here is to raise the temperature to the needed one step by step and then to cool down slowly. I bake 4 hours at a temperature of 700 degrees on Celsius; then turn off the muffler and don't open it for about 7-8 hours. The workpiece inside cools down gradually.

17. After baking, the cat becomes brick red. For painting the cat you'll need: acrylic and gouache paints of dark brown and red-brown colors; brushes № 1, 3, 6-7, a big tough brush or a tooth brush, transparent lacquer.

18. Begin with slight painting which will emphasize the texture of the sacking. For this take a big round brush and moisten the thing with water. Prepare gouache of dark red-brown color and with a small brush darken some parts of the cat. At once wash away the darkened parts with clean water, so that there shouldn't be the garish colors. Our cat has become absolutely smudgy. It's time to wash it! But don't do it immediately. Let the paint be absorbed into the ceramic for 5-10 minutes. Now take a big tough brush or a tooth brush and go to the bathroom! Under the jet of cold water wash away the excess of the paint. Don't forget to put on an apron! Otherwise you'll have to wash not only the cat!

19. Now the ceramic should dry — it'll happen quickly. And we begin to paint with acrylic paints. Color the cheeks and eyes, slightly emphasizing the lacing belt. I'm fond of doing it with the fingers: pressing slightly the white acrylic and emphasizing the lacing texture.

20. Color the stitch-buttons with different tints of red-brown.
