Do you often ask the question: «What do I do for recreation?» Children crafts will always help you answer this question and offer you a lot of interesting and unconventional ideas for whiling away your free time usefully.
This Festive Cake is made in the rolling technique from fluted paper. In some countries this technique is very popular. The rolls are usually stuck together with a glue pistol. But we use two kinds of glue: P V A glue and a glue pencil. P V A glue should be thick enough, a glue pencil — fresh. The main instrument for this technique is large knitting needles with stoppers at the end. For this work the knitting needles 4,5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm in diameter are used. You'll need a frame-base for making a cake from fluted rolls. You may use a ready-made cardboard box or do it yourself from thick paper or cardboard. Draw two circles from one center with radii 10 cm and 11,5 cm. Cut out on the external line. Make some toothed points from the edge to the eternal line.

Make the side edges of the lower layer. The length of the strip of the lower layer is 62,8 cm, the height — 10 cm. Cut out the strip with a spare part for gluing or stick some strips together. Bend the toothed points into one side. Glue the side edge. Glue the circle. You may glue the toothed points inside, but it's far simpler — with the points outside. You may put the circle on the table, insert a cylinder inside it and glue up the points. Then turn over.

Make a double fluted roll for decorating the surface. Snip a strip in size 15 cm broad from a big roll. Fold it in two and cut; you'll have two rectangles 15 x 25 cm. Mark the line of the middle by folding the rectangle. Take the knitting needles of 8 mm (you may take the needles of other size). Put a knitting needle on the edge of the strip (the stopper should hang from the table) and wind the paper round it tightly.

Wind round till the marked line of the midst. The paper from the other side wind round the second needle.

While winding round the second needle, hold the first with the hands.

Put the knitting needles vertically on the stoppers. Take the lower part of the paper with your fingers. With small movements from above downwards, tighten the paper till it all becomes fluted. You should make the paper fluted on small pieces, then move your fingers further.

The paper looks like this when it's fully tightened.

Now you can take it off the needle. You've got a double fluted roll.

Make the enough quantity of such rolls of various colors.

To glue the roll to the lower layer, measure its height. Stretch the roll till the needed length, cover thickly its wrong side with P V A glue and press tightly to the base.

Make decorations like white half-ovals. On a thick piece of paper draw a half-oval in size 12 cm long and 4 cm broad. It's better to make a template so as to draw such 6 figures. On the other side glue a strip of white fluted paper. Use only a glue pencil.

Cut out 6 workpieces.

Twist 6 double white rolls from the rectangles 13 x 25 cm on the six-millimeter knitting needles. Bend the roll, open slightly in the middle and flatten the ends.

Glue the roll on the edge of the workpiece. Make 6 component parts.

Twist double white rolls on the eight-millimeter knitting needles. Glue the upper surface with them — the wrong side up. Make two concentric circles.

Now you can start making roses. For this you'll need single fluted rolls. Take a strip (along the lines of gofers) 7 x 25 — 30 cm. Smear the edge with a glue pencil. Put a knitting needle on the opposite side and wind the paper round the needle.

And you've got a spiral rose.

Make the upper layer of the cake just like you've made the lower one. First, draw two circles with the radii 5 cm and 6,5 cm. Make the toothed points. Cut out the strip of the side part in size 6 x 31,5 cm (don't forget about the margin for gluing). Glue the base. Twist the rolls from the rectangles 13 x 25 cm. Take the thinner knitting needles — 6 mm. Cut each roll in half so that its height may be 6 cm. Glue the side parts over.

Twist two double green rolls and a few single green ones. Glue the double rolls from above on the edges, then glue the single ones like a spiral till you cover the whole surface.

For making stamens, take the strips in size 3,5 x 9 cm. Twist a single roll on the 4,5-cm needle. Tighten a small part.

Take off the roll and twist a braid from its rest part. Make some stamens.

Stick a bunch of stamens together, glue three petals round it, then — three more. From outside the petals can be glued over with thin fluted strips of paper. And you've got a flower.
